Imaginary character

Graham has big, bushy, messy hair, it's curly and as orange as a a mandarin.  His body is as round as a gym ball but fatter, he's 2.04m tall and he crouches over when he walks.  He does not have enough money to buy clothes so he walks around naked.

He's lazy and steals a lot of sugar. Now his smile, well he doesn't wear his smile! His face looks like what you would see if you saw the sportiest boy in maths class.  His skin colour is light brown but darker than a tan.  The opposite would be his caramel fudge that he eats, I think his parents don't make it right because it looks so white! l He's lazy and can't help himself but eat all the chips, cake, and chocolate he sees.

He likes to hang out on the couch at home mostly because he gets laughed at by people of all ages! He is a homebody, the only reasons he takes a step out of his house is if he is asking for money, when he does that he stands in the middle of the road. He likes eating and sleeping so his house is the best place for that. The people he hangs out with are...no one, no one's kind to him which is the last reason why he stays at home.

He  sleeps most of the time.  The only action he makes is reaching for the bowl of chips. People call him Snorlax because that is the best name to call him, it describes him beautifully.  Graham is so sad that no one likes him, in fact he moans about it all the time, that's when he's not asleep or eating chips of course, so that's about 3 seconds.

A phrase he uses is “I hate my life”. Only some people know this because he doesn't talk to anyone else except his parents. His accent - well if you were listening before no one would know, right?
Graham doesn't have time to hang out with anyone.  If he did I wouldn't know anyone that has the passion of eating and sleeping twenty four hours straight.

You remember how I told you that he moans about his life? No one listens to him.  They just walk past him, hear him but doing nothing about what he is trying to tell them.  One time he went to the doctor to try and lose some fat.  After 10 seconds of talking to his doctor the doctor said  Get out of my office”.  He didn’t even listen to him.   Graham deserves better! Graham lives in an old, dusty, small house that 284 people have lived in which makes it old and really cheap!

Travis wetlands

When I went to Travis Wetlands there were lots of pukekos, I felt surprised because we saw 6 pukekos in one spot. I took this photo because it's a cool action shot. We also saw 3 cats.

Riccarton bush

When I went to Riccarton Bush I saw this piece of nature. I took this photo because it looked so interesting, so cool and we didn’t think it was natural, which makes it even better!  I felt shocked when I saw it.

Discovery time reflection

My favourite discovery time would definitely be the fourth because Brayden, Enzo, Jacob, Luca, and I ran football. We made these really fun games and I got to play goalkeeper in some which I enjoyed.  A challenge was including others and getting them involved in our game because for the first 15 minutes the only people on the field was me and Brayden.  I have overcome this challenge by noticing when people wanted to join in and listening to their ideas.   A skill I have learnt through discovery time is to listen to others ideas so they might come to our activity and stay involved.

A learning focus would be making decisions because when I did the egg challenge me, Jordan and Brayden were fighting over what we were going to do with the egg first.  I overcame this challenge by letting it go and talking kindly.

I have become better at helping and cooperating because when I did the egg challenge we were fighting.  I overcame that challenge so helping and cooperating is what I have improved on.

Overall I feel what I have learnt during discovery in term one and term two is going to come in handy for the rest of my life.  Something I'm looking forward to in term four is…cooking some delicious food and seeing what delicious tastes like.

Rubbish is every where

Rubbish is everywhere

The part of my speech I am most proud of is my conclusion because I really think  it's quite funny that I said ‘the school is the local rubbish dump.’  The challenges I had writing my speech was finding a topic because there was lots of stuff I could have used, but there was really none that I was interested in.  The way I overcame this problem was by thinking about the schools’ problems. One of the biggest problems was the rubbish that was everywhere so I decided that would be the best bet.
Overall I feel my speech was written really well because I got a four for the written part of my speech. I also think it was written well because I had put lots of time and effort into it, I am really proud of my speech.

As I practiced reading my speech out loud I tried to use hand expressions to show more interest and to engage the audience.
I think I did well when I preformed to the class because I used expression, I looked at the audience the whole time and engaged with the audience.  I was challenged to use my hands to show how I felt with the problem because I am quite shy and using hands with my speech is something that would be in my worst nightmare.  I overcame this challenge by pretending everyone was naked!  Overall I feel that the presentation of my speech went well because the audience was looking at me and looked satisfied that rubbish should not be dropped around our school.

Rubbish is everywhere

                                   Rubbish is everywhere

Have you noticed how much rubbish has been left lying in our school?
The problem is...when people come in our school they get disgusted.
Under the classrooms and at the back of the field is such a mess it looks like the whole school has dumped their lunch box there.
How about the dog poo that you stepped on? The lazy person didn't bother to pick up.  All of this rubbish has been dropped in places that is harder to notice.

I thought I was going to school but instead I was going to a disgusting, soggy, stinky, rubbish dump.  I've been thinking about this issue.
This place needs a tidy up.

First of all your dogs, they're a rubbish making machine!
You’ll take a dog for a walk but forget the plastic bags and what happens then?...The dog poos. It’s all slimy and sloppy, ooh where's the bags? So what do you do? leave it there for someone to stand on? How disgusting, yuck!  If you remembered the bags you pick up the revolting poo but can't stand the smell... so what do you do? Drop it?  Why?  Stop this now! If you are a dog owner take responsibility for your dog!

Ok are you finding it hard to hear the truth? Are you ashamed? Can you see our school is being treated as a rubbish dump!  Why can't you put your chip packets in the bin? It's only 2m away from you. This is affecting the way we live.  I see at least one hundred every day! You’ll find them under room 11 and room 9 & 10.  You can help by putting all your rubbish in the bin.  You  can stop it - so why don't you?

This is a plastic ring, if you leave it lying around eventually food will get caught in it, then birds or mice will go for the food and get strangled and die, if not they have to go through pain and wear this ring for the rest of their life. But guess what this plastic ring ain't gonna break down it’s gonna stay there for 500-1000 years!
You see why it's best to put rubbish in the bin?
So stop leaving rubbish around!

Imagine the world if there was no rubbish, imagine how tidy it would be.  That's why we should stop dropping all our rubbish lazily on the ground.  You can help this issue by using something called the recycling bin and the rubbish bin.  I think Waimairi is doing a fantastic job with the food problem by making the organic bin!
But now, there is zip lock plastic bags I use each day, these keep my sandwiches fresh and yummy and stops the need for glad wrap this also stops glad wrap from being dropped around the school.
But remember these zip lock plastic bags can be washed and re-used so take them home in your lunch box, it's the little things you do every day that make a big difference.

Now I will leave you to think about our school the local rubbish dump!
If you had the power what would you do to change the world?

Waking up

I woke up feeling depressed and sad, I had to go to school!
I just relaxed in bed until my dad came to say “Hurry up”.  I forced myself to stand up and stumbled to the breakfast table. Weet-bix for breakfast just the norm.

I brushed my teeth, packed my bag, getting more and more nervous it - was getting closer! I was terrified, I was petrified, I was going to school!

I got to school after racing my sister we had arrived!  I was shaking all over I was about to enter the class.
That was my morning.

Stereotypeing explanation

Stereotyping is believing/thinking groups of people are the same when they’re totally different. This is unfair and it can hurt others it can also offend other cultures. Another way of explaining stereotyping is saying groups of people are the same when they’re not.

The first example of stereotyping is all Chinese work at fish and chip shops.  I disagree because not all Chinese people work in fish and chip shops. Although it is common to see Chinese working there in their own countries it might be different!

The second example is only England has double decker buses.
I disagree because in New Zealand they have tourist double decker buses and I've seen them in Christchurch so not only England has double decker buses!

Overall I think stereotyping is unfair because it can hurt people’s feelings and their culture. It can be offensive. The challenge is to never judge a book by its cover.

Camp moments

In the forest trees, wood, and rope hold sticks together while in the hut children build huts and stretchers, talked to each other and gathered sticks under the trees.

At the hot pools a waterslide, rock pools, and kids pools entertained us as the adults watched the kids, talked to each other, wrapped themselves in jackets to keep warm on the edge of the pool.

Outside amongst nature controls, maps, brains worked together in the fresh air as the children searched, stamped their maps, and read their maps as they raced along the tracks under the trees.

Where my heart lays

Where roller coasters sprint along the track.
Where the waterslide stretches its long rubber arms out over the grass, making me nervous looking at it!
Where 4D movies jump out at me.
Where my green lantern cape dances in the wind.
That is my happy place!

Soundscape learning reflection

This term I created a soundscape to accompany my poetic memoir.
The soundscape helps to create an emotion in that place, in that time with my special people. The soundscape does this by using different instruments in different places, I did this with garageband.

What I learnt was… soundscapes can be created by untuned instruments and tuned instruments. My learning is at a relational level because I can make a soundscape using my knowledge of the elements of music to create a mood or emotion to support a story, poem or picture.

My next step is to teach others to create music showing emotion

This is my soundscape

Memoir of a special place

Hanmer was usual enough; it had
Hot pools, water slides, a batch, a lolly
Shop, and even bike tracks
I'd never rode before.
My cousin, sister and I
Did what families do - biked in forests,
Swam in the hot pools, screamed down water slides Laughed at each other, fought with cans
On sticks, wrestled and walked.
Doing nothing important.

The meaning of my name

Hello my name is Oliver and I want to tell you about my name.
My parents chose my name together.  There weren't many names they both agreed on but they both liked Oliver. Macpherson is from my Mum's side and Wilson is my dad's last name.

Oliver is my great grandmother's maiden name and Macpherson, my middle name, is from the Scottish side of my family.

If I was a girl I would have been called Harriet!!  Some of my cousins call me Ollie.  The reason I like my name is because it is the most popular boys name in the world!!
